AUGUST SUMMER MORNING PROGRAM CANCELLED

Thank you for your participation in the one week trial of our summer morning program last June.  We had 15 total kids attend during the course of the week which resulted in lots of fun games, activities, programs and songs for all that were involved.  We also took the opportunity to gain some valuable information and insight into what it takes to run the Club for 11 hours a day.  We are writing to you today to address the issue of the second pilot program which was proposed to run from August 16th – September 3rd.  The Staff and Board of the Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area have decided to not run a second pilot program based on an analysis of current capacity, enrollment, cost analysis and resource availability for those weeks.  We have heard that several families were relying on the Club offering a second pilot program in August, to those that this decision will cause hardship, we apologize.  However, please know that we genuinely enjoyed the time that we spent with your kids this June and will continue to look for ways to improve the offerings of the Club in the future while strengthening families and offering youth a safe, fun and positive place to spend their day.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR UP AT LAKETRAILS

This year's trip to Laketrails Base Camp was again a success.  The Boys & Girls Club took 12 members to Lake of the Woods canoeing July 6 - 14.

The kids were split in to two different groups heading two different directions.  After learning how to steer canoes, pack wet-packs and plants not to eat or use if stuck in the wilderness, the campers started their 4 night 5 day journey "on trail".  "On Trail" means paddling canoes to a predetermined destination, with all your food in a tote called the "General" and all your clothes in a wet-pack 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall.  That's right, you get all your clothes for the next 5 days in that little wet pack.  The first thing you do after a 8-10 hour day paddling a canoe is get your tent set up and then it is on to making supper.  After supper, the dishes need to be cleaned up and maybe a dip in the lake before the sun goes down.  When it gets dark, the bugs come out in full force.  The kids wake up every day of the trip and repeat this process: breakfast, paddle, lunch, paddle, supper, sleep.

There is not a kid who has gone to Laketrails who didn't like it!  The members usually find out there is life without cell phones or Facebook!

Most times the coolest thing the kids who participate find is.......themselves!!
